Any organization that has received a grant is likely familiar with the process of measuring indicators, tracking data, and reporting to funders. But, all too often traditional evaluation approaches fall short of helping organizations understand their impact on increasingly complex social issues with no clear path or solution, such as early childhood development and child and youth mental health. Kerri Klein and Michelle Colussi from SHIFT Collaborative developed and facilitated a workshop at the Foundation’s Annual Leadership Summit on “Strategic Learning for Social Impact”. We explored questions such as, ‘what evaluation approaches are best suited to complex issues?  How can evaluation generate meaningful learning that tracks impact, but also informs changes in how we think, plan and act?’?
