The communities of the Peace Athabasca Delta region (Mikisew Cree and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nations, Fort Chipewyan Métis Association) are deeply invested in protecting the Delta, and were a key force that led to the designation of the Wood Buffalo National park as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Together, they are working to establish the Delta Research Institute as a place where western and indigenous research in the Delta will be aligned and applied for greater impacts. SHIFT worked with the Solutionogenics team to design and facilitate 7 virtual Governance co-design sessions for the partners. The proposed structure is citizen driven and designed to support both individual and shared community/stakeholder interests while also strengthening harmony across communities and external (western) stakeholders/interests. It includes: vision, mission, values, a membership structure, a Board structure and core committee terms of reference (Elders, Youth and Research Councils).
